(background) the country has been degrading for years because the ruling monarch is not acknowledged by the gods. It'd take a long time to explain everything since in a way the whole series is the story of their romance. Temple Head is the antagonist in part 2, Ferdinand the Head Priest is the main love interest. I'm not sure exactly how they're getting translated, but you've got the Temple Head and the Head Priest who are often at odds with each other. However, it's pretty obvious to Ferdinand, her friends, her family, and the reader that she's just still in a state where she hasn't realized it yet. On Maine's part, until the very end she insists she doesn't really understand love and doesn't think she has any romantic feelings for Ferdinand, thinking of him more like family or a generic precious person. However, it's quite obvious he developed deep romantic feelings for her at some point as well. He does say that part of it is that he was jealous of Maine's loving family, having had a terrible family situation himself, and that he wanted to have a part of that. That being said, in the later bits of the story Ferdinand is quite possessive of Maine, making jealous moves towards others who had eyes for her at one point or another and giving her flashy jewelry with protective charms to basically say 'Hands off'. They both wanted the other in their lives, even if there was no romantic feelings (or at least, that's what Maine said). He basically proposed to Maine not that they get married specifially so much as 'Hey, wanna just take this territory? You can build a huge library and I can build a connected research lab'. In the climax a lot of stuff happened, including Maine saving his life and the two of them essentially taking over the territory.įrom there their marriage was half one of convenience, half Ferdinand's scheme. He also saved her life several times, rushing to her rescue and acting as her personal physician when she was sick.Įventually he wound up in an engagement in the neighboring territory he really didn't want for a lot of reasons, and Maine was very upset about how nobody was considering his feelings. They built up a good working relationship where she'd do something crazy, he'd make her plans work while scolding her, etc.

At first he thought she was kind of weird and irritating, but when she was put in danger he was surprised to find that he was genuinely concerned for her, something rare since he's usually quite grumpy and relatively cold-hearted.

To put it simply, Ferdinand was in charge of educating her at the temple in part 2.
